Finding clarity in the hard parts.

We talk to people in your shoes every single day. We’ve collected those conversations here to give you an honest look at the Oklahoma legal process with no buzzwords. Just the facts you need to move from feeling stuck to being informed.

A quick note before we dive in: We are lawyers, but until we sign an official agreement, we aren’t YOUR lawyers. This page is built to help you find your footing and understand the legal roadmap in Oklahoma, but it doesn’t replace the specific strategy we create in a 1-on-1 session or that a real attorney can provide. We’re here to help, but when you are ready for a deeper dive give us a call.

The Starting Point.

  • Whether you believe it right now or not, it’s going to be okay. You are navigating a massive life change, and the weight you’re carrying is heavy. Take a moment to just breathe. You don’t have to have all the answers today, that’s what we’re here for. We meet people where they are at, and right now, you are exactly where you need to be to start moving forward. You aren't alone in this.

  • Start right here by getting educated on the Oklahoma process. Once you’ve gathered your initial thoughts, the next step is to book a strategy session. We use that time to look at your specific situation and start building your roadmap so you don't have to carry the weight of the "what's next" alone.

  • Your absolute priority is safety, both physical and emotional. If you are in a situation that isn’t safe, that is the first thing we address. Beyond that, gather as much information as you can. Look at your accounts, your assets, and your documents. Knowledge is power. Once you have the facts, we help you come up with a game plan and guide you through it.

  • Start by reading through the sections on this page. We built this to be a starting guide for exactly where you are. But getting educated isn't just about the law; it's about getting clear on what you want your life to look like when this is over. We want you to be the expert on your goals so we can be the expert on the strategy to get you there.

  • Yes. We are big proponents of mental health and counseling. These are massive life changes, and they take a toll that a law firm isn't equipped to heal. We handle the legal roadmap; we highly recommend you find a professional counselor to help you navigate the emotional one. Taking care of your mental health ensures you are making decisions from a place of clarity rather than just pain.

Peaceful Resolutions.

  • Mediation is a confidential negotiation where a neutral third party helps you reach a voluntary agreement. At Ramick Law, Jillian serves as our dedicated mediator. We see it as the human alternative to a cold, expensive courtroom battle. Instead of letting a stranger decide your future, you and Jillian sit down to map out a resolution that works for your life.

  • Yes, and it is often the most efficient path. Under Oklahoma law (43 O.S. § 107.1), there is a mandatory 90-day waiting period for divorces involving minor children. If you already agree on the big things, Jillian can help you bridge the remaining gaps during that waiting period.

  • The law doesn’t require it, but we always suggest having your own counsel as a "safety net." Jillian remains neutral and cannot give legal advice to either side. We often work with parties who are already represented by other firms to help them reach the finish line. Our goal is to be the calmest people in the room.

  • In Oklahoma, the moment a divorce is filed, an ATI (43 O.S. § 110) goes into effect automatically for both sides. It’s a legal "pause button" that prevents either person from hiding assets, changing insurance, or moving the kids out of state. It’s not a "cold" legal attack; it’s a safety net designed to keep the status quo stable while we work on your long-term roadmap.

  • Yes. This is often called "Informal Negotiation." Sometimes, the hard parts can be solved with a simple, real conversation between attorneys or a four-way meeting. If you and your spouse are 90% of the way there, we don't force you into extra steps. We help you navigate that final 10% to get the deal done and the paperwork filed.

  • The longer a case drags on, the more "positions" tend to harden. Jillian recommends early mediation because it allows you to solve the complexity before it turns into a battle. By sitting down early, you save your resources (financial and emotional) for your future rather than spending them on months of legal back-and-forth.

  • Most of our cases are filed for "no-fault" based on Incompatibility. This simply means you no longer get along and there is no chance of reconciliation. It’s the most straightforward path and avoids a public airing of grievances in a courtroom.

  • Oklahoma is an "Equitable Distribution" state. The court divides marital assets and debts in a way that is "fair and just," but not necessarily a 50/50 split. We look at the real human factors, like the length of the marriage and each person’s contributions, to ensure the division makes sense for your future.

  • Yes. Per 43 O.S. § 107.2, Oklahoma requires parents of minor children to complete an educational program (like "Children in the Middle"). You’ll need a certificate of completion from a provider like OSU OKC before your final decree is signed.

  • This is a huge point of confusion. "Separate" property is generally what you brought into the marriage or received as a specific gift. "Marital" property is almost everything else acquired during the marriage, regardless of whose name is on the title. We help you sort through the complexity to identify what stays yours and how to fairly divide the rest so you can move forward with financial clarity.

Family Transitions

  • Oklahoma uses a specific "Income Shares" model (43 O.S. § 118). It’s a mathematical formula that looks at both parents' gross incomes, the number of nights the kids spend with each person, and who is paying for health insurance or daycare. It’s not about "winning" or "losing", it’s about ensuring the kids have what they need in both homes. We use the official Oklahoma guidelines to give you a clear, honest number.

  • Unlike child support, there is no "magic calculator" for alimony in Oklahoma. The court looks at two main things: Need and Ability to Pay. They consider how long you were married, the lifestyle you had, and whether one person stayed home to support the other’s career. We help you navigate this by looking at the facts and building a roadmap that is fair and sustainable for your next chapter.

  • Legal orders aren't set in stone. Under Oklahoma law (43 O.S. § 112), if there is a "permanent, substantial, and material change" in your situation—like a job loss, a move, or a change in the child's needs—you can go back to court to modify custody or support. We help you navigate these updates so your roadmap stays current with your life.

Billing, Tech, and Logistics

  • It is the most transparent way to ensure you only pay for the actual work performed. Every minute billed is tied to a specific action on your roadmap. You pay for the expertise that moves the needle, not buzzwords or hidden fees.

  • Our home base is in Oklahoma City, but we serve Oklahoma, Canadian, and Cleveland counties, including Moore, Norman, and Edmond. If you’re too busy for a commute, we offer virtual mediation and strategy sessions via secure video calls.

  • By law, we cannot mix your money with the firm’s money. Your retainer stays in a separate Trust Account until it is earned. This is a massive ethical standard that protects you. We use PracticePanther to give you a real-time look at your trust balance, so you always know exactly where your resources are. No secrets, no "cold" accounting—just the facts.

  • A retainer is an initial deposit that stays in your name. We place it in a secure Trust Account (often called an IOLTA). Think of it like a "prepaid legal tank." As we perform work on your roadmap, we draw from that tank and provide you with a regular, detailed statement. If your case ends and there is money left in that tank, it goes right back to you.

  • We use PracticePanther, a secure client portal that puts your case in the palm of your hand. You can view your roadmap, check your status, and handle billing 24/7 from your phone.

The Ramick Law Journey

  • We call these "strategy sessions" because we provide value from the first minute. You bring the problem, and we start building the plan. We look at your documents, identify your risks, and give you a real human perspective. By the time the session is over, you will have a much clearer vision of your next three steps.

  • Once you move forward, we send your agreement and invoice electronically. Within 24 to 48 hours, we hold an internal team meeting to brief everyone on your case. We aim to have your initial filings or outreach completed within 7 to 10 business days. We don't do "fluff" work, we move fast to get you moving.

  • Guilty. Dogs are part of our world here, and if you meet in-office, you may see one of our “law dogs” (they’re friendly—just big fans of people). If you’re allergic, anxious around animals, or just prefer a pet-free meeting, tell us ahead of time and we’ll absolutely accommodate you!

  • You are hiring a team. Depending on your needs, you will have a lead attorney supported by our operations team and specialized interns like Isabella. We use a partnership model, meaning whoever you are talking to is focused on keeping you on your roadmap. We operate as a team.
